PERFORATED SPACE | 2022 - 2023
NEDERL.

At the carpentry workshop on the quay, there is a large quantity of plywood panels, from which rows of identical shapes have been cut out with a computer-controlled sawing machine (CNC). It is waste material, ready to be thrown away. These panels should offer many possibilities when used in the construction of a space. The many openings will provide fields of rhythmic shadows when light falls through, while the space behind the wall also becomes visible.

In a darkened studio, the white painted panels are illuminated with photo-lights where filters provide the color. Initially, the panels are placed behind each other as rhythmic abstractions. Then they gradually slide apart and spaces are created between the panels. when the space becomes important, only white light is used. In the last works the color returns. All photographs have been created in 2022 and 2023.

From 2018, the entire space in the photographs is physically built, with the sole purpose of being photographed. The building process is like a journey to a location never visited before. The search is intuitive with an unpredictable outcome. An essential aspect of these spaces is their scale; they are large enough to enter. When photographing these spaces, it is possible to print the photo at the same size as the original space. The photo then coincides with the space it shows. (see SET 2016-2021).
