Photographic installation 6 inkjet prints on canvas, variable sizes Municipal Theatre “Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam” Commission by Amsterdam Foundation for the Arts 2002 - 2003 One enters this nineteenth century Theatre through a Rotunda lobby, which is located in the centre of the building, exactly underneath the auditorium. Visitors will walk up to a large wall filling photograph, depicting a strange industrial space. The represented space is the attic, located above the auditorium ceiling. By confronting visitors with this image, they can experience how the space continues above their head. Above the ceiling is another space, another world. For this installation, 6 large scale photoprints are placed on different locations throughout the building. The space on the photograph is directly related to the room where the print is installed, almost as a portal that leads to a different site in the building. Walking through the theatre, it is like the building opens up to the visitor, turning itself inside out. The stark and often dusty spaces interact in a peculiar way with the heavily decorated environment of the theatre. |
