installation in Amsterdam Subway station Underneath the Amsterdam subway station Weesperlpein, a second station is located. This rudimentary station was constructed for future expansion of the subway, that never happened. Meanwhile, the space functioned as a nuclear bomb shelter, during the Cold War. Deep underneath the ground and sea level, thick walls of concrete are used to give weight to the construction and hold the entire station in place. Openings in these walls, provided with stairs, connect the separated compartments. Constructed in 1977 and covered with thirty years of dust, this space lies still, as a spatial copy of the public space. It is silent down there, except for the soft rumbling of passing trains and the noise of the fluorescent lights. Some large photo-prints on canvas, installed in the Storefront gallery INKIJK on the transfer level of the station, give an impression of this silent world. INKIJK gallery organizes visual art presentations in storefronts, in several subway stations in Amsterdam. Subway station Weesperplein is located on Sarphatiestraat and Wibautstraat in Amsterdam.
