Renovation of the Jewish Historical Museum, 2004-2007
Photos by Jan Theun van Rees

The Jewish Historical Museum, housed in a historic complex of four former synagogues, carried out a major renovation of its exhibition spaces and public areas from 2004 to 2007. During the renovation, some parts of the complex were emptied out entirely. The builders removed gates, footbridges, and ceilings added during the previous renovation (in 1987) and opened bricked-up windows. It was a unique and precious opportunity to see and experience the buildings in their original, 17th and 18th-century form and appearance.

Amsterdam photographer Jan Theun van Rees was asked to capture the moments of transformation from the old situation to the new. For him, this assignment was part of a long-running photo project to document the renovation of Amsterdam museums and theatres, including the Rijksmuseum, the Stadsschouwburg (Municipal Theatre) and the new Stadsarchief (City Archive). But his photos have more than just documentary value. Through strong compositional choices and ingenious use of ambient light, Van Rees has succeeded in portraying these buildings, with their rich history, as places suspended in time between past and future.
