In a run-down neighberhood of Chicago, stands the Aragon Ballroom, a concert hall from the early twenties. The lavishly decorated interior resembles a palace from fairy tales. For many years, Brian Durack has been the light engineer. In one part of the basement, he has created his own world. Here, he collects organ pipes, that he hooks up to a huge organ, that fills up the whole space. Along the walls, on eyelevel, runs a model train. At night, when no one is around, he plays the organ, while the train is cruising around the room. When I visit him to photograph his world, he offers me a DVD with a home movie, that finally becomes the starting point for this presentation. In shakey images, we look over Brian's shoulders, while he descends from the attic to his own domain, underground. In the photographs, the camera holds still at several spots, that are passed by rapidly in the movie. The deeper I get into the bulding, the closer the camera approaches the objects, which eventualy become a world of their own. Printed life size, the intimicy of this hidden paradise becomes almost tangible. |
