In 2018, an undefined desire grows for a space with an undefined atmosphere. When an empty space is temporarily made available, the opportunity arises to satisfy the desire by building that dreamed-of space yourself. Without construction knowledge or skill, this seems a doomed undertaking; there is no plan, let alone a design. Improvising, an eleven-metre-deep corridor of paper is created, with light shining through the paper. The construction seems to be a visualisation of many spatial impressions, gained over the years, without explicitly referring to a specific location. In the following years, several spaces are created in this way. It is essential that these spaces can actually be entered. They are not models. With each space, we start all over again. The process is therefore long and the spaces that are created can differ greatly from each other. The spaces are created for the photo. When a space appears through the lens of the camera that gives the sensation of being in that place for the first time, it is time to take a photo. The photo is nothing more than a precise registration of everything that makes up the space and the light present. After the photo, the space is dismantled again and only the photo remains. The photo is therefore a historical document of a place that once was somewhere. Due to the high resolution of the image, the photo can be printed in the same format as the original space. The space therefore only exists as a photo, the print therefore coincides with the space it represents. At the same time, photos are still being taken of locations and spaces or corners where the light affects the space in a special way. An interaction is created between the space that is created in the privacy of a studio and the impressions of spatial situations on location. |
