STILL The image that has come to a standstill, the world frozen. 'Still' can be read as an abbreviation of 'Still life'. The still life is often a an arrangement of different objects. However, this arrangement does not necesarely have to have taken place consciously, it must be perceived consciously. The 'still lifes' in this section have been both consciously created and observed on location. They therefore appear in the section of both, 'SET' (the constructed spaces), and 'SITE' (the spaces photographed on location). When photographing a space, the mutual relationships between walls, windows, incidence of light and objects that may be in that space are examined. The examination of the interaction between the objects on a site requires the same gaze with which the entire space is observed, but on a smaller scale. In Japan, objects are carefully arranged on a tray, in the same way the tray is placed on the table, just as the furniture is placed in the room, the different rooms in the house are grouped and the house in the street. The placement of a single bottle can then have the same meaning as the design of an entire city. |
