All photography originates from curiosity about specific manifestations of a space. Specific spatial properties are investigated in long-term projects. What all these projects have in common is the notion that one space does not exist without the space on the other side of the wall and that ultimately all spaces are connected, regardless of how many walls separate them. 'Hidden Space' shows residual spaces in buildings that remain out of sight of visitors. They form, as it were, a negative of the space where one is located and that is perceived. The wave of renovations in Amsterdam's cultural institutions during the first decade of this century aroused curiosity about the 'Dismantled Space' behind those construction fences. If each closed building forms a complex of hidden spaces, then all those closed cultural palaces together made a hidden city. In Japan, a fire department regulation stipulates that a house must always maintain a certain distance from the boundary of the plot. All houses are therefore separate from each other. During the first visit to Japan, a fascination for this 'functionless' spaces 'In Between' arose, partly inspired by the literature of Haruki Murakami. |
